What is a trade war?

A trade war occurs when countries raise tariff’s (taxes) to trade with other countries. In the case of the US and China, we see the US imposing additional tariff’s on certain products so that it is more expensive for China to import goods into the US.

Dividends have made headlines recently due to Labor’s proposal to remove refunds of excess franking credits to low and zero tax paying investors. Putting these proposed changes aside, I agree with Anton that dividend income will always remain an important element to consider when constructing an equity portfolio.

Below is a summary of Anton’s three key reasons why dividends have always been and will continue to be important for investors to consider.

It is increasingly difficult to see the wood for the trees. As financial advisers we are often asked what the market will do today, tomorrow or next week. The simple fact is that nobody knows what the market will do today or tomorrow.

In fact, it’s anybody’s guess as to whether the market will go up or down on any given day. So don’t try to time markets over the short term.

Returns over time

Some time ago, Dr Shane Oliver, Chief Economist at AMP Capital, produced a graph (below) showing the percentage of positive sharemarket days over varying time periods.

I was pleasantly surprised that many of my clients took this market movement in their stride, taking it for what it was – a correction. Nonetheless, I thought now would be an appropriate time to give it some context and answer a few questions that might be on your mind.

What spooked the market?

It all started on the back of good economic data in the US. Unemployment is at a 17-year low and wage growth at its strongest levels since 2009.

How can this be a bad thing?

The US market has been heading in a direction of growth for ten years, since the onset of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Prior to the GFC, the US share market peaked at 14,093 points in October 2007 before falling to a low of 6,627 points in March 2009. Eight years later things have changed. Since the GFC, growth has been phenomenal – rocketing off the back of US corporate growth and recovery of the US domestic market.

The above factors have led to some clients – many newer ones to Hewison Private wealth, to question, whether they should move to cash or whether now is a good time remain invested in the sharemarket.

There are understandable questions to be asked, particularly with the Australian sharemarket currently sitting at around 5,000 points, a significant fall from its 6,000 point high in April 2015.
