As a culmination of 20 years of driving the development increasing education and practicing standards in Australia, the Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA) made certain ground breaking amendments to its constitution at an Extraordinary General Meeting on Thursday night that will revolutionise it as a true professional organisation and its members as true professional advisers.
The FPA will now restrict its membership to practitioner members who either hold the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional designation or are studying towards obtaining CFP. From 2012, entry to the CFP program will require a minimum of a university degree qualification.
The FPA already has a robust Code of Ethics and Professional Practicing Standards and a disciplinary process in the event that a member fails to fulfil these practicing obligations.
While Hewison Private Wealth has had a degree-based qualification and CFP standard in place for over a decade, we see this as a truly momentous achievement by the FPA and the creation of a standard of professional excellence upon which the public can rely.
