We have known John Hewison since 1986 when he became our financial advisor. A few years later he started his own company and adopted a non-commission/kickback system, not then prevalent among financial advisors. It is still not. The company has grown from two at the beginning to employing 17 staff, all of whom are very dedicated to their work. We have been impressed to know that each year the company has a retreat for a couple of days, in which time new ideas are mooted and the sense of family that permeates this company is reinforced.

Apart from our personal interaction with John often humorous and showing compassion, we have been impressed by the selection of investments with regard to growth and income. For this reason we have encouraged our children to avail themselves of the services provided by the company. My wife and I have “been with” Hewison Private Wealth for about fifteen years. We were living in Indonesia in the mid-nineties, I was on a three year contract with an Australian company in Jakarta and Sue was lucky enough to gain employment teaching in the American International School. Of course I had a house and car, plus other benefits, provided by the company in Jakarta.

Prior to going to Indonesia we had four children at private school and our only assets were our house and the regulatory company superannuation fund.

In Indonesia we had a reasonable joint income with few outgoings and had let our house here in Melbourne. As a result of course we were building up a, dare I say modest capital base which I think was sitting in the bank earning a fairly ordinary rate of interest. My sister-in-law, who had previously agreed to be the go-between with the letting agent we had appointed here in Mt Eliza, recommended that we talk to John Hewison about managing our increasing funds. This turned out to be one of the best moves we could have made.

Not long after joining the Hewison fold, we were getting disturbing reports that the tenant in our beloved house back here was a ‘very difficult and demanding’ person to deal with and that the agent seemed to be ‘in league’ with the tenant. This was resulting in one very stressed sister-in-law. We agreed that we would talk to John Hewison to find some alternative method of managing the tenancy.

Without hesitation John suggested that he become the new letting agent. This immediately solved our problems and the result was very satisfactory. As far as I know we have never paid any fees in addition to our normal portfolio management fee for this extraordinary additional service which destressed the sister-in-law and gave us peace of mind whilst in Jakarta, snookered by distance.

From that day on ‘Hewisons’ earned our loyalty and we have never been disappointed with advice received from them regarding financial matters, such as the best way to finance house renovations, new cars etc. I guess what I am trying to say is that the service Hewisons provide is so much more than just a clerical procedure.

Having said all that I should also say that after fifteen years of managing the various stages of our portfolios that I have every confidence in Hewisons management procedures and investment advice. It is also a comfort to know that Hewisons is building up a very strong management team which is obviously very well coordinated and cohesive to continue into the future.
